SSU-Marin LOOC (Locally Open Online Course)
September 17-November 12th
We revised a popular, graduate-level educational technology course from Sonoma State for a Marin population of educators. Good teachers are aware that when they teach content--that is the curriculum for their course--they are also enacting, through their pedagogical practices, their philosophy of teaching and learning; praxis is essential to this process. We focus on educational technology and the pedagogical implications of teaching and learning with technology in order to combine key theoretical concepts with the practical application of technology; the goal is for participants to reflect and take informed action (both personally and systemically) based on our praxis.
Guiding questions of the course:
Last Two Assignments: Due Tuesday, Nov 12th at MCOE
Collaborative Class Portfolio: This collaborative class portfolio offers you a chance to post BOTH a (1) reflective blog post outlining the future actions or change you intend to implement based on the course materials and interactions and (2) add a Course Artifact based on your work to the class portfolio. Your artifact should be something from (related to) the course that you are proud of and would like to share with your peers. Click on the tabs above to learn more about the Reflective Blog and Course Artifacts.
Importance of a Portfolio: in the digital age, one’s online presence is very important. Your online space is your first handshake - make your contribution assertive, personal and professional.

Guiding questions of the course:
- What does learning look like in the 21st century? What does literacy look like in the 21st century? What is knowledge in the 21st century? (Or what does it mean to “know” something in our mediated culture?) How might these questions (and potential answers) support or challenge school-based learning?
- What are key characteristics of new media environments (e.g. social network sites, blogs, and wikis)? How might these characteristics inform pedagogical and curricular choices? How can educators maintain focus on one’s learning objectives while integrating technology? How can educators support students’ access to and evaluation of media and digital resources?
- What are participatory cultures? What is connected learning? How might participatory cultures and connected learning inform school-based notions of learning? How might educators, specifically teachers, develop an ecological understanding towards learning and promote collective change? How might professional development opportunities in schools be changed and/or transformed to promote a community-based approach?
